In a clash of the cricketing titans, the Arts XI defeated the Mayor’s XI in a hard fought match at Leura on 15th December, to raise money for the Mayor’s Bushfire Appeal.

A crowd of keen spectators contributed more than 250-dollars to the Mayor’s Bushfire Appeal.

The teams played for ‘The Flamin’ Willow’ perpetual trophy, designed and made by Paul Brinkman and James Culkin of the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. The hand-made base is of solid Aussie spotted gum, while the Flamin’ Willow is painted in oils, with ash from the recent fires. It is planned the trophy will go on permanent display at the Cultural Centre.

Candidate Susan Templeman, who lost her home in the October fires, came along to cheer the teams on, as well as federal member Louise Markus MHR.

The Arts XI scored 7 for 112 in reply to the Mayor’s XI 9 for 111 in the 20/20 (8 ball overs!) match. The ‘always thinking’ Arts skipper Dr Larry Buttrose won the toss, and reading the conditions, (bit of moisture causing a slow outfield) sent in the Mayor’s XI, led by Clr Daniel Myles (Mayor Clr Mark Greenhill was interstate).

Mayor’s XI opener Craig Beechey top-scored with 42 and Clr Michael Begg a very handy 34, while local member Roza Sage MP chipped in with a neat cameo at the end.

Actor Tiriel Mora did the damage, taking three wickets for the Arts team.

In chasing down the total, Arts opener Steve Krinks scored 35, before a mini collapse, and then a critical captain’s knock from Larry Buttrose, a quickfire 22 not out, including three boundaries.

It was a perfect scriptwriter’s ending, with the captain striking the winning run.

Tony Gasparre took 3 wickets (and 2 catches as keeper), and Shane Wainwright 3 sharp catches.

The energy was great, weather ideal, with a wonderful Blue Mountains community spirit.

The teams are set to have a rematch in March. It only leaves one question: Who will be the victor in  2014?
